Mobile Radio

Mobile Setup

A road-ready amateur-radio installation should be electrically safe, mechanically secure, easy to operate, and designed to minimize RF and electrical noise.

POWER

Direct, fused power

Use appropriately sized conductors and fusing close to the battery source. Route wiring away from sharp edges, heat, and moving parts.

RF

Clean coax routing

Protect coax from pinching and abrasion, maintain bend radius, weatherproof exterior connections, and keep it separated from high-current wiring where practical.

SAFETY

Driver-friendly controls

Mount control heads and microphones securely so they do not obstruct visibility, air bags, controls, or safe driving.

Installation Checklist

Mobile build priorities

  • Battery connection and correct fuse placement
  • Chassis/firewall pass-through protection
  • Control-head mounting and cable strain relief
  • Antenna placement and ground-plane considerations
  • Coax routing and weather sealing
  • Ignition and alternator noise checks
  • SWR check before normal operation
  • Microphone placement and distraction reduction

Road operating reminder

Hands-free and distracted-driving laws vary by location. Configure the radio before moving, use presets and safe controls, and prioritize driving at all times.
